2000 International Hero - Pamela Arbuckle, D.D.S., M.P.P.
Dr. Pamela Arbuckle is a social service dentist in Alameda County, who has dedicated her career to providing basic dental health and wellness care and education to traditionally underserved groups, such as the homeless, substance abusers, and those with HIV and AIDS. While Dr. Arbuckle has chosen a career path less taken, she extols the many professional rewards to be gained from such an experience.

Her professional philosophy has always been to improve the dental health of those in her care, however brief the encounter might be. For example, while at San Francisco General, she was among the earliest practitioners to provide training for general dentists on how to care for patients with HIV and AIDS.

Dr. Arbuckle serves with the Job Corps as the regional dental health consultant, and recently volunteered to provide dental care for native populations in remote Central America.  She also serves as a volunteer mentor to UC Berkeley undergraduates interested in pursuing dentistry.

Dr. Arbuckle is president of the UCSF Dental Alumni Association, and has received numerous honors for her dedication and service in the field of dental health, including UCSF's Community Dentistry Award and UC Berkeley's Rosalie M. Stern Award for Public Service.
