2000 Organizational Hero - Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente is America's largest nonprofit health maintenance organization, serving 8.6 million members in 12 states and the District of Columbia. Opened to public enrollment in October 1945, Kaiser evolved from the industrial health care programs which existed for construction, shipyard, and steel-mill workers employed by Kaiser industrial companies during the late 1930s and 1940s.

Currently, Kaiser Permanente stands as a model of an integrated health delivery system, which organizes and provides or coordinates members’ care, including preventive care such as well-baby and prenatal care, immunizations, and screening diagnostics; hospital and medical services; and pharmacy services.

The Kaiser organization is widely regarded for its historical commitment to serving a broad-ranging social benefit role in the communities it serves, including innovations in new health care delivery and financing methods; investments in basic research; and assistance for uninsured and special need populations. Accepting the award on behalf of the organization is Dr. David M. Lawrence, chairman and chief executive officer of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals.
